Ruth Philo and Stuart Bowditch
Fabric: Silk Road is a timely cultural and ethnographic exchange making connections between the silk mills of Sudbury, Suffolk and the silk industry and traditions in China, investigating the current state of the use, manufacture and continuing significance of silk in the 21st century.
During 2018 artists Ruth Philo and Stuart Bowditch are working with silk mills in Sudbury to capture an insight into the current manufacture of silk making in the region. They will also make a research trip to meet with their Chinese partners, visit sericulture plants, make new connections with silk industries and museums in Xi’an, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing.
Following this in 2019 the artists will make a journey along the Silk Road, from east to west, researching contemporary silk making, its history, uses and the people involved with its production. They will be making a travelogue of their journey, sharing examples of silk and associated artefacts, as well as documenting sounds and images along the way.
In 2020-21 they plan to work with their partners to curate exhibitions in both the UK and China, which will include examples of silk, sound, image and artefacts from a range of countries along their journey.

This has enabled her to make some connections with Chinese artists and begin to discuss ideas for the new project, which have been well received.
Since 2016 Stuart has been working for the Essex Record Office Sound and Video Archive, recording the sounds of the county, capturing a cultural moment in time by documenting its people, places and events for You Are Hear: sound and a sense of place, a Heritage Lottery Funded project.
Their previous project The River Runs Through Us supported by Arts Council England and Dedham Vale AONB was completed in 2018.
