A contemporary painter, Ruth also works on projects connecting people and location through place-making. She is interested in the palimpsest, layers of history in the landscape and exploring these threads to reveal rich cultural connections.
Stuart is a sound recordist , artist and musician who is inspired by location and the people, experiences and objects he encounters there. In particular he is interested in sounds that are associated with place, overlooked and overheard noises of the everyday and highlighting the auditory as a defining factor in how we experience a particular environment.

The Journey |
旅程
|
The journey has already begun in Sudbury, Suffolk where there are four working silk mills dating back to 1740. The artists visited Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company to collect images and sounds of the processes used there in silk manufacture. They will continue to collect information on the silk industry in Suffolk and Essex in preparation for their trips to China.
In October 2018 Ruth and Stuart are undertaking a research trip to China to look in to the origins of silk in the east, it's use as a material, trading routes, contemporary sericulture and to establish links with project partners (see red placemarks on map below). In 2019 they plan to make a journey from China to Europe overland, looking at the current state of silk on the Silk Road, its manufacture, history and assessing it continuing cultural significance. They will also collecting samples and artefacts, making a travelogue and linking with partners in different countries regions in preparation for exhibitions in the China and UK in 2020. |
